About

We aim to promote the practice of book reviewing and to introduce early career scholars to academic publishing. We pair early career researchers with experienced mentors who guide them through the process of writing and publishing a book review.

Working with Byron Hyde during the BPPA Reading Group was a great experience. His organisational skills made everything run smoothly, and as a PhD student in political theory, I really enjoyed the chance to discuss ideas and publish a review with him

FAQs

What are the benefits?

We teach how to write a book review for publication, how to write in the active first person, and how to work collaboratively. Participants will also have a publication to add to their academic CV, evidencing these skills and helping them to stand out in an increasingly competitive academic market. In many cases, this will be their first publication. Click here to apply.

How much does it cost?

Participation in the standard programme costs £100. The expanded programme costs £150. We have institutional agreements that allow some students or early career scholars to participate free of charge. For more information about our programmes, visit the about page. To learn about our institutional agreements, see our projects.

Where does the money go?

This is a non-profit initiative. All fees go towards the centre's administrative costs, including banking fees, website hosting, the operations manager's time, and small honoraria for mentors. We also occasionally offer participation fee waivers when we have sufficient funds. Unlike many academic societies, we have a policy of spending rather than accumulating the money we receive.

Is this a predatory initiative?

No—we take academic integrity seriously. While we have a strong placement record for reviews, we can't guarantee publication in any journal, which is entirely at the discretion of journal editors. This isn't a "pay to publish" initiative. It's also non-profit: we keep participant fees as low as possible, support participants with applying for funding from their home institution, and offer fee waivers when we have the means to do so. We're very grateful for the significant amount of voluntary work that goes into the centre.
